Separated Parents & Summer Plans

The summer holidays are just around the corner and whilst most of us are looking forward to the longer days and warm weather, it is easy to forget just how difficult the summer holidays can be for separated parents.

Separated parents can face many difficulties when it comes to sharing the summer holidays. Difficulties can include:

  • Deciding who the child(ren) will spend time with including how often and for how long
  • Taking the child(ren) abroad
  • Communicating with the other parent

To avoid unnecessary conflict with the other parent, it is important to plan ahead and discuss arrangements for the child(ren) in advance of the holidays. It is also important to inform each other of any intended trips abroad with the children to avoid any dispute surrounding travel. Alternatively, if you have a court order in place, it is essential to review this. Court orders usually have provisions for how the summer holidays should be shared and it is essential that this is followed, otherwise you could be in breach of your order (unless explicitly agreed between both parents). If you’re facing difficulty in reaching an agreement or interpreting a court order, seeking legal advice can be helpful.
